OK it’s a big call but I’m going to go out on a limb and say as far as swimming holes go Dunns Swamp, or Ganguddy as the area was known to the local Wiradjuri tribe, is a better than anything in the mountains…
Come on: Sandy beaches, shallow areas for the younger or less adventurous, picnic areas, pagodas, bush ranger caves, hand stencils, bush walks, enough room for a canoe or a little tinnie to cruise about with a fishing rod, free camp ground. It’s a pretty nice spot.
Of course it’s a bit further afield being a 45min drive out side of Rylestone on the edge of the Wollemi NP.
Getting there:
Coming into Rylestone from Kandos turn right into Fitzgerald Street, this becomes Narrango Road. Follow this for about 2.5km and veer left to stay on Narango Road.
After 14.5km this becomes Coricudgy Road and then Mount Coricudgy Road for 7.1km. Go up the steep hill between pagodas and turn off left at the signs for Dunns Swamp.
It’s a bit of a drive from the mountains but worth a day trip or longer stay. That said the secret is well and truly out so turning up on a weekend and hoping to find a spare camp site is a bit risky.
