The Wolgan Valley is one of my favourite places to go to get away from it all.
The free camp ground at the end of the road has windy loos and plenty of space but can get busy on long weekends. The Kiosk sells basic food and drinks and can offer more upmarket camp sites or luxurious cabins. Of course if you have cash to burn the 6 star resort is up stream too.

The river itself tends to be shallow and sandy, especially near the camp ground which makes it a good spot for younger kids to have a splash around. While you wont find any super deep pools, if you are willing to explore aways either up or down stream you could find bits deep enough to cool off in or a rapid to use as a natural spa.
It’s a long drive in for a wade but the setting is spectacular and it’s a great place for a picnic.
And if sitting in the river on a hot day enjoying a nice cold beer sounds altogether too boganish for you, all I can say is don’t knock it until you try it.
Getting there: Turn off the Castlereigh hwy at Lidsdale onto the Wolgan rd. Follow the tourist signs to Newnes. The pass into the valley is narrow and windy but then the valley opens up in all its glory. The last 10km or so (Once past the resort) is dirt and the valley closes back in before opening out again. Follow the road to the camp ground, just across the little creek and prepare to relax.
